About Yukioto
Yukioto brings together traditional Japanese calligraphy and a modern approach to living with calm, meaning, and intention.
Each piece begins by hand, rooted in centuries-old practice, and is created to be lived with — not just displayed.
The Artist — Shuka
Shuka is a Japanese calligraphy artist with over 40 years of experience in shodō, the traditional art of Japanese brush writing.
She holds the rank of Shihan — a master-level certification that reflects not only technical skill, but the ability to teach and carry forward the discipline.
Born and raised in southern Japan, in the heart of Kyushu, her work is deeply influenced by nature, seasonal rhythms, and long-standing cultural traditions.
Now based in the Cotswolds in the UK, she continues to create with the same quiet intention — sharing these ideas in a way that can be lived with and reflected on every day.
Our Philosophy
Japanese philosophy offers a way of seeing the world — one that values balance, simplicity, and awareness.
Concepts such as Kokoro, Ma, and Yūgen are not abstract ideas, but ways of living — shaping how we experience space, time, and meaning.
Through calligraphy, these ideas take on a physical form — something to return to, reflect on, and live alongside.

The Process
Each artwork begins as an original hand-brushed character.
In shodō, every stroke is made in a single, continuous movement — there are no corrections. The final piece captures a unique moment of balance, movement, and intention.
The natural variation in ink, texture, and brush pressure is not controlled, but embraced, forming part of the character’s expression.
Each design is then carefully prepared for print, preserving the energy and authenticity of the original work.
Why Yukioto
In a fast-moving world, it is easy to lose a sense of stillness.
Yukioto was created to offer something quieter,
a way to bring meaning into everyday spaces through simple, intentional design.
Each piece is not only something to look at, but something to live with.
